Aeromarine Plane and Motor Company

The Aeromarine Plane and Motor Company was an early American aircraft manufacturer. The company was founded by American businessman Inglis M. Upperçu and operated from 1914 to 1930 (it was known as the Aeromarine-Klemm Corporation from 1928 to 1930). Aviation pioneer and promoter Harry Bruno worked with Aeromarine to commercialize the transportation potential of air flight. The firm also built aero engines.

The Aeromarine Plane and Motor Company played a significant role in the early development of aviation technology during the early 20th century, producing a wide range of innovative aircraft and warplanes used by the US military during World War I.

The History of Aeromarine

Aeromarine can trace its history back to its establishment in 1908 by U.S. Navy officer and aviation pioneer, Lawrence Sperry, along with engineer Carl Norden and a group of investors. Originally named the Curtiss-Sperry Aeroplane Company, it later became known as Aeromarine in 1914.

In its early years, Aeromarine focused on designing and manufacturing flying boats, contributing significantly to the development of naval aviation. The company gained attention for its innovative aircraft, including the Aeromarine 39, a biplane that achieved recognition for its stability and reliability.

During World War I, Aeromarine actively participated in supplying the Allies with aircraft and continued to play a role in the post-war aviation industry. The Aeromarine 75, a flying boat developed in the 1920s, became one of the company’s notable successes.

Aeromarine’s influence extended beyond aircraft production. In 1920, it established one of the first scheduled international airline services, offering flights between Key West, Florida, and Havana, Cuba.

However, financial challenges and the changing landscape of the aviation industry led to the decline of Aeromarine in the late 1920s. The company ceased aircraft production in 1929, marking the end of its active involvement in aviation.
