North American X-15

The North American X-15 was an iconic and groundbreaking experimental aircraft developed in the 1950s and 1960s as part of a joint program by NASA, the U.S. Air Force, and the U.S. Navy. It holds the distinction of being one of the most remarkable X-planes ever built.

The X-15 was designed to explore high-speed and high-altitude flight regimes, ultimately pushing the boundaries of manned aviation. It was a rocket-powered aircraft, propelled by an XLR-99 rocket engine and equipped with a slender fuselage, delta-shaped wings, and a distinctive wedge-shaped tail.

The X-15’s primary mission was to gather valuable data on aerodynamics, heat resistance, control systems, and human physiological responses at extreme speeds and altitudes. It set numerous records, including altitude and speed achievements that still stand today.

During its operational period from 1959 to 1968, the X-15 made a total of 199 flights, with twelve different pilots at the controls. It reached altitudes exceeding 350,000 feet (nearly 107 kilometers) and achieved speeds exceeding Mach 6, which is about 4,500 miles per hour (7,200 kilometers per hour).

The X-15 program played a pivotal role in advancing aviation and space exploration. It provided invaluable data for the design and development of future spacecraft, as well as critical insights into high-speed flight, aerodynamics, and the effects of extreme environments on human beings.
