Curtiss C-1 Canada Aircraft Overview
The Curtiss C-1 Canada, also known as the Curtiss JN-4 Can, was a variant of the famous Curtiss JN-4 “Jenny” biplane that was produced for the Canadian military during World War I.
The C-1 Canada was a two-seat primary trainer aircraft that was designed to provide Canadian pilots with the skills they needed to fly more advanced aircraft. It had a fabric-covered wooden frame, ailerons on both upper and lower wings, and was powered by a 90-horsepower Curtiss OX-5 engine.
The aircraft was produced in large numbers in Canada by Canadian Aeroplanes Limited (CAL), which had been set up specifically for this purpose. In total, over 3,000 C-1 Canadas were built between 1917 and 1919.
The C-1 Canada played a significant role in the training of Canadian pilots during World War I and helped to establish Canada’s aviation industry. The aircraft was also used by the Royal Air Force and the United States Army Air Service for training purposes. After the war, many surplus C-1 Canadas were sold to civilian operators, who used them for barnstorming and other airshows. Today, a small number of C-1 Canadas still exist and are preserved in museums and private collections.
